If you are unable to work because of an illness, employment law states that you must self-certify for up to 5 working days. If the absence is longer than this a certificate may be issued by a doctor after consultation. Employers do not have a right to insist on a note before 5 days have passed. If you do require a certificate before this time a private statement may be issued for which there is a charge.
